HHS Speech & Debate 

2015-16 RESULTS

Norton Tournament Results
Highland Speech and Debate competed at its final, regulation tournament of the season held at Norton on January 30. The team finished 4th out of 24 teams. Helping lead the team to this success were: Sara Hoose and Jacob Lewton - Tournament Champions in Public Forum Debate; Ava Mastrianni, Abigail Grace Catron, Kelly Meaden, Amelia and Cecilia Mainzer, Lydia Mainzer, Nick McFadden, Clara Vorndran, and Carissa Temerson. The team now sets its focus on the Districts and the National Qualifying Tournaments. 

Sharon B. Althoff Rotary Invitational Results
Highland Speech and Debate competed at one of the largest tournaments in the state on January 23. This mock-state tournament had 39 of Ohio's best schools competing. The team took a resounding 3rd place in the team sweepstakes. Helping to lead the charge for the team were the following semi and quarter finalists:

Sara Hoose and Jacob Lewton, Victoria Grayson, Hannah Stein, Taylor Headrick, Greg Pace, Amanda Vanke, Lydia Mainzer and Clara Vorndran, who were Super Congress Finalists; Katie Linger and Alyson Hagen.

Placing in the top six at the tournament were Abigail Catron (5th, overall, in Informative Speaking); Austin Levan and Noah Zona were 2nd, overall in Public Forum Speaking.

Team Wins Laurel Tourney
Highland Speech and Debate continued its successful season by winning the Laurel Tournament on January 16. Highland bested 36 teams from Northeastern Ohio. This is the second tournament the team has won this season. Leading the Hornets were: Hannah Stein, Ameilia and Cecilia Mainzer, Amanda Vanke, Taylor Headrick, Andras Fabian, Victoria Grayson, Ava Mastrianni, Ben Rife and Holly Barber Carissa Temerson, Noah Zona and Austin Levan.


Speech & Debate Team Takes 3rd
Highland Speech and Debate continued its successful season by placing 3rd in the team sweeps out of 23 teams at North Canton Hoover High School on January 9. The team has placed in the top six every week this season and is having the best season in Highland history! Leading the team to this success were:

• Noah Zona and Austin Levan, 5th in Policy Debate
• Joseph Chema, 4th in Informative Speaking
• Kelly Meaden, 6th in US Extemporaneous Speaking
• Lydia Mainzer, 4th in Student Congress
• Carissa Temerson, 4th in Student Congress
• Clara Vorndran, 2nd in Student Congress

Highland Tournament Results
Highland Tournament Results from 12/19/15:  Placing 5th in Student Congress in each of their chambers were Carissa Temerson and Lydia Mainzer. Scott Blum was 6th in his chamber. Lauren Johnson placed 2nd in Original Oratory. Ava Mastrianni placed 6th in Informative Speaking and Michael Back placed 3rd. Kelly Meaden placed 6th in United States Extemporaneous Speaking.  The team placed 3rd in Team Sweeps continuing its record of placing in the Top 6 every week this year!

Earning her bid and locking in a place at the state tournament was Ava Mastrianni. The team now has four competitors that are guaranteed a spot at the state tournament. The additional three are Jessica Bentley, Victoria Grayson and Abby Catron.

Glen Oak Debate & Congress Results
Advancing to the first elimination round in debate were Quade Mainzer in Lincoln Douglas debate and the team of Sara Hoose and Jacob Lewton in Public Forum debate. The team of Noah Zona and Austin Levan advanced to the 'sweet 16' in Public Forum debate and Lydia Mainzer placed 6th in Student Congress.

Canton McKinley Speech Results
Andras Fabian was 4th in Humorous Interpretation, and placing in Informative Speaking were Ava Mastriani, 7th, Abby Catron, 6th, Jake Severyn, 5th and Victoria Grayson was tournament champion. Speechies finished the tournament with a third place in Team Sweeps. 

Earning their fourth bid December 12 and locking in a place at the state tournament were: Victoria Grayson and Abby Catron. Congratulations! The team now has three competitors who are guaranteed a spot at the state tournament.

HHS Team Places 3rd

The Highland High School Speech & Debate Team traveled out of district on December 5 to compete against schools from the Cleveland District. HHS finished 3rd out of 33 teams. Placing at the tournament were:

  • Brianna Pinchot and Anna Sollenberger, 6th in Policy Debate
  • Abby Catron, 5th in Informative Speaking
  • Hannah Stein, 4th in International Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Katie Linger, 7th in Prose Oratorical Interpretation
  • Jessica Bentley, 5th in Prose Oratorical Interpretation
  • Lydia Mainzer, 5th in Student Congress
  • Carissa Temerson, 3rd in Student Congress

Jessica Bentley secured a spot at the state tournament with her performance on December 5. She will represent Highland this coming March in the category of Prose Oratorical Interpretation at the State OHSSL Tournament.

HHS Speech & Debate Team Places 1st!
Highland Speech and Debate Team won its first tournament of the season on November 21 at the Copley Speech & Debate Invitational Tournament. Helping to lead the HHS team to victory were the following students who place in their respective categories:

Delaney Lerch – 3rd in Declamation Speaking
Cecilia and Amelia Mainzer – 4th in Duo Interpretation
Andras Fabian – 3rd in Humorous Interpretation
Samantha Zeiger – 5th in Lincoln Douglas Debate
Victoria Grayson – 5th in Informative Speaking

Highland Places 5th at Stow-Munroe Falls Tourney

Highland Speech and Debate Team competed November 14 at the Stow-Munroe Falls Invitational Tournament. Michael Back was tournament champion in the category of Informative Speaking, and the team of Brianna Pinchot and Ben Rife were tournament champions in Policy Debate. 
The HHS team placed the following students finishing 5th overall over 32 additional teams. Ava Mastriani, 3rd in Informative Speaking; Ben Rife and Holly Barber, 4th in 2-Person Policy Debate (Ben received Best Speaker Award); Lydia Mainzer, 5th in Student Congress; Carissa Temerson, 3rd in Student Congress; Abby Catron, 2nd in Informative Speaking; Tian Treb, 5th in Lincoln Douglas Debate; and Braden Webb, 4th in Lincoln Douglas Debate.

Highland Places 4th at Wadsworth Tourney
Highland Speech and Debate Team competed November 7 at the Wadsworth Invitational Tournament. Victoria Grayson was tournament champion in the category of Informative Speaking. The team also placed the following students finishing 4th overall over 24 additional teams.  Also placing were: Ava Mastriani, 3rd in Informative Speaking; Anna Sollenberger and Brianna Pinchot, 5th in 2-Person Policy Debate; Nick McFadden, 6th in Student Congress; Lydia Mainzer, 5th in Student Congress; Carissa Temerson, 2nd in Student Congress; Jessica Bentley, 3rd in Program of Oral Interpretation; Austin Levan and Noah Zona, 5th in Public Forum Debate; Cecilia and Amelia Mainzer, 5th in Duo Interpretation.

Highland Finishes 3rd at Perry Rotary Speech Tourney
Highland Speech and Debate Team competed on October 31 at the first regulation tournament of the season, and also one of the largest in the state. Highland placed three competitors in the top six in a single category of Informative Speaking with Victoria Grayson bringing home the coveted Perry Chair as a tournament champion. The team also placed the following students resulting in the best showing at this tournament in Highland history finishing 3rd overall over 33 additional teams. Also placing were 
Ava Mastriani, 3rd in Informative Speaking; Abby Catron, 5th in Informative Speaking; Lydia Mainzer, 2nd in Student Congress; Jessica Bentley, 3rd in Program of Oral Interpretation; and Julianne Origlio, 6th in Dramatic Interpretation. Notable, but not placing was Samantha Zeiger, who went undefeated in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding tournament!

In order to be considered to attend the Sylvania Tournament, students must qualify in the following categories:
• Competed in all six of the first tournaments of the season (Highland Tournament is the cut-off)
• Placed a minimum of three times out of the six
• Competitors must be a current senior
• Competitor’s parents must pay for hotel, transportation and be available to judge at tournament. This is a two-day event.
